School hosts Oscars-style sports stars celebration with speeches by professional cricket and rugby players

Students at Worle Community School Academy in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset have been honoured with a variety of sporting awards in a glittering sporting Oscar’s style ceremony.

They were rewarded for their sporting achievements throughout the year on a night of celebrations.

Prizes were presented by special guests, professional cricketer, Sophie Luff and professional rugby player and ex-WCSA student Aaron Thompson who both gave speeches. Sophie’s plays for Western Storm and Somerset while Aaron plays for Bristol Bears. 

Izzy, 14, was celebrated for her incredible swimming achievements with her eyes on the next Olympics and the Year 10 football team won the Somerset Cup for the first time in 20 years.

Gymnastics Nicole, Maria, Niamh, Lottie and Megan competed in a team of 5 and secured a gold medal in their first international competition in Cantanhede, Portugal, for Great Britain’s team. 

There were awards for student stars of sports including Netball, Hockey, Gymnastics, Basketball, Rounders, Cricket, Rugby, Football and Athletics.

Special awards went to students who had shown huge improvements throughout the year.

And to finish the evening there were top sportswoman and sportsman of the year.

Principal Jacqui Scott said: “This was a fantastic evening with such a wide array of sporting achievements. We are passionate about sports at WCSA. Well done to all our students.”
